An International Driving Permit in Morocco is a translation of your home licence, not a licence in its own right. Many visitors rent cars without one, but it becomes important if your licence is not printed in the Roman alphabet, and it is a useful extra at police checks. Here is who needs an IDP, who can skip it and what to carry when you pick up your car through OneClickDrive.

What is an International Driving Permit in Morocco?

An IDP is a small booklet that translates the details of your national licence into several languages. It only works together with your original licence, never on its own. Your home country issues it, usually through a motoring organisation or a licensing authority.

In Morocco, French and Arabic are the working languages for police and rental desks. An IDP helps when an officer or supplier cannot read your licence quickly.

Who needs an International Driving Permit in Morocco?

The clear case is a licence that is not written in the Roman alphabet. If that is you, get an IDP before you travel, because suppliers cannot always accept a licence they cannot read.

Your licence IDP needed?
Printed in Roman script (UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia) Not required, recommended as a precaution
Printed in Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic or another non-Roman script Yes, bring an IDP
Provisional or learner licence Not accepted, IDP does not change that
Expired licence Not accepted

If you are unsure, send the supplier a photo of your licence through OneClickDrive and we will check before you pay anything.

Who can skip the International Driving Permit in Morocco?

A UK or EU photocard licence is generally accepted for tourist stays, and so are most licences in Roman script. New to renting here? Read our notes on things you should know before renting a car in Morocco. In practice, a valid licence and passport are what the supplier checks first. Our guide on how to drive in Morocco with a UK licence covers this in detail.

Carrying an IDP anyway costs little and removes doubt. It is worth it if:

  • you plan a long road trip through the Atlas or the south, where checkpoints are more frequent;
  • your photocard is worn or the photo is hard to read;
  • you hold a licence from a country the supplier does not often see.

How to get an International Driving Permit in Morocco before you travel

  1. Check which type of IDP your country issues and confirm that it is valid for Morocco.
  2. Apply through your national motoring organisation or licensing authority.
  3. Bring a passport photo and your valid licence.
  4. Allow time. Some issuers post the permit, so apply at least two weeks before you fly.

What to carry when you collect your car

  • Your original driving licence, valid for the whole rental period
  • Your International Driving Permit, if you have one
  • Your passport
  • Your booking confirmation
  • A payment card in the driver’s name if your supplier asks for a security deposit

Keep these in the car, not in the luggage. See our guide to the car rental deposit in Morocco to know what to expect at the desk.

How OneClickDrive handles your booking

OneClickDrive is a car marketplace with local suppliers across Morocco. You tell us the dates, pickup point and car type, and we confirm the price and conditions with a supplier. A 20% advance through OneClickDrive secures the booking, and you pay the balance directly to the supplier when you collect the car.

IDP, licence translation and digital licences

These three are often mixed up, so it helps to separate them.

Document What it is Accepted at the desk?
Original driving licence Your national licence, issued at home Always required
International Driving Permit A translated permit that accompanies the licence Yes, alongside the licence
Printed or sworn translation A translation made by a translator Sometimes, ask first
Licence photo on a phone A picture of the licence No, carry the physical licence

Four myths about the IDP in Morocco

Myth 1: an IDP lets you drive without your licence

It does not. The permit is only valid with your original licence, so leaving the licence at home makes the IDP useless.

Myth 2: an IDP replaces insurance paperwork

It has nothing to do with insurance. Cover is part of your rental agreement.

Myth 3: every renter must have one

Renters with a valid licence in Roman script are normally accepted without one. It is only compulsory when the licence cannot be read.

Myth 4: you can buy it when you land

An IDP is issued by your home country, so it must be organised before you fly.

A seven-day checklist for your International Driving Permit in Morocco

  1. Check your licence expiry date and the name spelling against your passport.
  2. Apply for an IDP if your licence is not in Roman script, or if you want the extra reassurance.
  3. Send us your dates, pickup city and car type.
  4. Confirm the deposit, insurance and fuel policy with the supplier.
  5. Print your booking confirmation and keep a digital copy.
  6. Photograph the front and back of your licence and passport for emergencies.
  7. Check that your payment card is valid and in the driver’s name.

What happens at a police checkpoint?

Checkpoints are common on the roads between cities and are usually routine. Slow down, wind down the window and greet the officer. You may be asked for:

  • your driving licence, and your IDP if you carry one;
  • your passport or identity card;
  • the rental agreement and car papers, which the supplier provides.

Keep calm and polite, and show the documents when asked. If a fine is issued, ask for an official receipt and tell the supplier.

If you live in Morocco

Residents rent with a valid Moroccan licence and national identity card. An IDP is not part of the process. Tourists rent with their home licence and passport. Our minimum age guide explains the rules that apply to every renter.

Does the International Driving Permit in Morocco matter if something goes wrong?

If there is an accident, the police and the insurer will want to see a valid licence. A permit that makes your licence easier to read can speed up the paperwork, but it does not change who pays for damage. For that, check the excess and cover in your rental agreement and the deposit terms.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Morocco as a tourist?

Not if your licence is in Roman script and valid, but carrying one is a sensible precaution.

Is an IDP the same as an international driving licence?

In everyday use, yes. Officially it is a permit that accompanies your own licence. It never replaces your national licence.

Can I drive in Morocco with only an IDP?

No. You must carry your original licence together with the IDP.

Does an IDP cover car insurance?

No. An IDP says nothing about insurance. Third party liability is required by Moroccan law and is included in legitimate rental prices.

How long is an IDP valid?

This depends on the type and the country that issues it. Check the date printed in your permit before you travel.

Will the supplier refuse me without an IDP?

Not if your licence is in Roman script and valid. If your licence is in another script, expect to be asked for one. Ask us before you book.
