You’ve probably heard about all the big tourist spots—Marrakech, Fez, and the Sahara Desert in Morocco. These places are amazing, but if you want to travel off the beaten path, there is so much more to see of Morocco.
Some of the best experiences come from being free to make your own schedule. Guided tours and public transportation are great, but they all too often pass by some of the smaller, more authentic places that give you a real feel for the country. So, if you’re considering a visit to Morocco, here’s why renting a car in Casablanca might just be your best decision.
Casablanca: The Perfect Starting Point for a Road Trip
The majority of people consider Casablanca as a stopover city: fly in, catch a glimpse of the Hassan II Mosque, and press on. But probably most of them do not know that Casablanca is actually a great starting point for some excellent road trips. By car, you can reach hidden gems few tourists hear about.
Unlike Marrakech or Fez, which are pretty touristy, Casablanca has access to some of Morocco’s lesser-known but equally stunning spots. With a car rental Casablanca, you are not confined to this city alone; you have the whole country at your fingertips. Freedom to come and go as one pleases will make all the difference.
Imagine meandering through Morocco’s picturesque coastline or up into the mountains to find tiny villages that seem frozen in times of yore. Having a car lets you do that where you can take detours at will, stop at scenic beauty spots, and explore the real Morocco whenever you want.
Allow us to show you some of our favourite unexplored treasures that you could easily reach once you rent a car in Casablanca.
1. Azemmour: The Unspoken Coast Town
Lying just an hour south of Casablanca, the little town of Azemmour gets completely bypassed by the tourists. So relaxed with its old Portuguese architecture and winding streets perfect for wandering, it runs directly along the Oum Er-Rbia River, giving it some killer views.
Most tours blast right by Azemmour, but you are able to stop here and take it all in with your own car. The medina is less crowded than other medinas in Morocco, and locals are friendly with no pressure from them. This is a great place to take yourself away if you need something that is a bit more low-key.
2. El Jadida: The Underrated UNESCO World Heritage Site
Head down the coast further, and you come across El Jadida, another hidden gem seemingly few people know about. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to a very well-preserved Portuguese fort complete with an ancient cellar. Yet, for whatever reason, it doesn’t hold quite the same weight as the likes of Essaouira or Agadir.
Casablanca car rentals will give you the easy ability to take a day to meander around El Jadida at your leisure. You can take your time walking down the old streets, seeing the fort, and, if the weather allows, even hitting the beach. It is just a perfect spot for a day trip, and since it is nothing like touristy, you are able to experience an actual Moroccan experience.
3. Beni Mellal: Gateway to Middle Atlas Mountains
If you are in love with nature and mountains, then go inland and take a ride to Beni Mellal. It is considered a gateway town into the Middle Atlas Mountains, enclosed by some of the most beautiful landscapes of Morocco. It is so easy to get there by renting a car and making your way through the lush valleys, waterfalls, and trails that hardly any tourist knows about.
Beni Mellal is famous for its olive groves and agricultural feel. This place is perfect to show the rural aspect of Morocco. On the road to get there, one can stop in small Berber villages and see people out of the big cities. You can make your car go slow and enjoy the ride.
4. Oualidia: Morocco’s Secret Coastal Lagoon
Otherwise, for those who like seafood and beaches, it would be Oualidia. A couple of hours north of Casablanca, this is a coastal town with oyster farms and a really beautiful lagoon. Very few tourists ever hear about Oualidia, but if you have a car, it’s an easy drive to spend a day lounging by the water, eating fresh seafood, and even taking a boat ride around the lagoon.
Oualidia is super chill, just the place if you want to get away from people and just wind down. It is not flashy, but in a quiet, subtle manner, beautiful, which makes it one of my favourite spots in Morocco.
5. Tiddas: A Taste of Rural Morocco
Head out to the real and best off-the-beaten-path destination, Tiddas. It is an agricultural town between Casablanca and Fes, where farming traditions in Morocco bear extreme importance. It has olive groves, vineyards, and wheat fields. You can even stop at local farms and purchase fresh produce directly from farmers.
Tiddas is one of those places you would never be able to find unless you have your own car, but being there would give you a glimpse into life in rural Morocco. It’s peaceful, it’s real, and a great change of pace from the big cities.
Casablanca Car Rental is the Way to Go
If you want to go and show your interest in more than those “touristic” places, rent a car in Morocco. You will be able to go at your rhythm, discover the beauties of the place, and see the real Morocco—no crowds.
Besides, now renting a car is really easy: you book with the supplier directly, you pick it up once you’ve arrived or get it delivered, and voilà. These shorter or longer trips really make quite a difference when you have wheels of your own.
Next time any of you go to Morocco, don’t just stay on the highways; get off onto those side roads and see what that great country is really made of. Trust us, you won’t be sorry!
